Description
NR-10 The Doors 1967 Matrix Club, San Francisco Concert Poster (AOR-2.127). First-printing San Francisco concert poster in the Neon Rose series for The Doors appearing at the Matrix club on Fillmore Street on Tuesday thru Saturday, March 7-11, 1967. Known as NR-10 in Eric King's poster guide and designed by Victor Moscoso, this specimen is the scarce first printing with the green border as opposed to the second printing with an orange border. The hobby's Bible, The Art of Rock, thought so much of this artwork that it gave the poster a full page - but even then, it was the more common second printing, not this scarce first. Measures 13 7/8" x 20" and grades to Very Good condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.Literature: See Grushkin, Paul, The Art of Rock: Posters from Presley to Punk, Abbeville Press, New York, 1987, p.169 (full-page illus.).
More Information: The Doors play three sets each night in this small but important nightclub that doesn't seat many more than 100. The Matrix certainly didn't "clear the house" after each set, because no song is repeated all night. They open the first set with "Back Door Man," "My Eyes Have Seen You" and "Soul Kitchen." They close it with "When the Music's Over."
The second set opens with "Close to You" and "Crawlin' King Snake" and goes on to include "People Are Strange," "Who Do You Love," "Alabama Song," "Crystal Ship," "Twentieth Century Fox" and "Moonlight Drive." Whew! The third and final set then ends with the powerful trio of "Break on Through," "Light My Fire" and "The End." (Thanks to Greg Shaw's book The Doors on the Road – Ominbus Press, 1997 – for the details.)
Condition details: Poster is pretty clean save for some crumpling which occurred at the top center edge, which goes about an inch into the pink artwork as well. It produced a ¼" edge tear which shows as a thin white line, and there's a little whitening to the top edge of the poster as well.
