Description
NR-0 Steve Miller 1966 Neon Rose Matrix S.F. Poster Signed by Victor Moscoso, Graded 9.4. An original first-and-only-printing concert poster for the Steve Miller Blues Band and Congress of Wonders appearing at Marty Balin's small Matrix nightclub on Fillmore Ave. in San Francisco on Tuesday-Friday, December 20-23, 1966. Designed by Victor Moscoso and printed by S.F.'s Bindweed Press, this poster was signed by Moscoso in pencil down in the lower left margin, where he added an abbreviation of "Copyright 1966." It was then graded a delightful 9.4 Near Mint by CGC (the Certified Guaranty Company). Measures 14 1/8" x 19 7/8". COA from Heritage Auctions.More Information: This was Moscoso's very first poster for the Matrix, and his only one that was entirely 1966. Eric King's poster guide states that Victor would usually print a couple thousand of each Neon Rose poster to start and then go into reprints, but for NR-0, "This poster was printed only once with a press run of definitely less than 500, probably in the 300 range." So it's rarity is assured, being signed and slabbed, this is obviously a plum opportunity.
Steve Miller is hailed here as being "from Chicago," where he became deeply steeped in the blues, but soon relocated to the Bay Area and became a fixture on the psychedelic dancehall scene. He signed on with Capitol Records and built an FM-underground following until breaking through commercially in the 70's with hits like "The Joker," "Rock'n Me" and "Jet Airliner." He still tours to this day, 57 years later.
The Congress of Wonders were a San Francisco comedy team who made a couple of albums reflecting the concerns of the late-'60s/early-'70s hippie counterculture: drugs, sex and political/social satire, writes journalist Richie Unterberger in AllMusic. They weren't quite as sophisticated as, say, the Firesign Theatre or National Lampoon, and were a little more stoner-centric, as one might imagine. They sometimes framed their humor within mock commercials, soap operas and plays.
