AN EARTHQUAKE OF A POSTER WITH A WINDOW-RATTLING GRADE

FD-21 Janis Joplin w/Big Brother, Bo Diddley 1966 Avalon Poster Signed by Stanley Mouse, Graded 9.8. First-printing San Francisco concert poster for Bo Diddley and Big Brother & the Holding Company with Janis Joplin playing at the Avalon Ballroom on Friday and Saturday nights, August 12 & 13, 1966. Known as FD-21 in the Family Dog numbered series, this poster was designed by Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelley, and Mouse has signed it in pencil in the lower right. It was subsequently graded to a Richter-scale 9.8 Near Mint/Mint by CGC (the Certified Guaranty Company).

It was a natural theme for a San Francisco concert poster: the city-leveling earthquake of 1906, in which this was the 60th anniversary year. Mouse & Kelley picked one of the most compelling photos from that disaster as their central image, and then dialed it way back into the orange color.
