Description
THE FIRST FAMILY DOG DANCE AT THE AVALON
FD-5 Blues Project, Great Society (w/Grace Slick) 1966 Avalon
Ballroom Concert Poster Graded 9.0. A first-printing San
Francisco concert poster for the Blues Project and the Great
Society with Grace Slick performing at the Avalon Ballroom on
Friday and Saturday nights, April 22 & 23, 1966. Known as FD-5 in
the Family Dog numbered series, this poster was designed by Wes
Wilson and graded to a 9.0 Very Fine/Near Mint by CGC (the
Certified Guaranty Company). This was the first Family Dog event at their new home, the Avalon Ballroom; the Dog's previous four dances had all been at the Fillmore. And it was the first FD poster printed in color; the previous four posters all used just black ink. So this American-flag motif, signaling the company's move to the Avalon, really garnered a lot of attention. Measures 14" x 20 1/16". From the Ben Bierman Carmel Street Collection. LOP from Ben Bierman, COA from Heritage Auctions.
More Information: This poster also offered the first appearance of the Dog's new informal slogan, "May the Baby Jesus Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Mind."
Like seemingly most of the bands on these early posters, the Blues Project had just formed the previous year, 1965. They had just released their first LP, Live at the Café Au Go Go, recorded in New York City, which entered Billboard's LP chart in May. It contained covers of classic blues tunes by Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, Howlin' Wolf and Bo Diddley, plus Donovan and Chuck Berry songs.
And we don't need to tell you that the triple-Slick Great Society had released their one & only single, "Someone to Love" b/w "Free Advice," just two months prior to this. It would stiff this time out, but who woulda thought that a year later "Somebody" would become the most famous rock hit to emerge from San Francisco in the 1960's.
