Description
BG-0 Grass Roots, Quicksilver 1966 Fillmore Auditorium Poster Signed by Bonnie MacLean, Graded 9.6. First-printing San Francisco concert poster for the Grass Roots, Quicksilver Messenger Service and the Family Tree playing at the Fillmore Auditorium on Friday and Saturday nights, April 22 & 23, 1966. Designed by Bonnie MacLean and oddly known as BG-0 in the Bill Graham numbered series, this poster has been boldly signed by Ms. MacLean down in the lower right corner. It was subsequently graded a totally chill 9.6 Near Mint Plus by CGC (the Certified Guaranty Company). This was the first Fillmore concert poster designed by Ms. MacLean, who was Bill Graham's secretary and would eventually end up marrying him (June 1967) and bearing a son with him. Measures 12 5/8" x 18 5/8". COA from Heritage Auctions.
More Information: This poster represents the peak of local law enforcement harassing Bill Graham before he became a respected member of the community through his well-run Fillmore concerts and civic-mindedness. At this point Graham was still very much an upstart and disrupter, and was still being denied a full-time permit to hold dance-concerts. According to his autobiography Bill Graham Presents, the cops pulled a paddy wagon up to the Fillmore on Friday night and moved in for the kill. Some teenagers were arrested for alcohol, and eventually Bill himself was arrested at 3:00 AM. So it's sort of appropriate that this poster is numbered "BG 0," even though it was the fourth official dance-concert Bill had presented at the Fillmore.
As for this poster's opening act, the Family Tree was led by Stockton, Calif.-born Bob Segarini, whose very first mid-60's Los Angeles band, The Ratz, featured Gary Duncan later of Quicksilver Messenger Service (also on this poster). Segarini formed the Family Tree in 1966 and released an indie folk-rock single that didn't make a splash. But they signed to RCA Records and released a single in '67 and an album, Miss Butters, in 1968, named after Segarini's real-life kindergarten teacher. The LP was produced by Rick Jarrard (JA's Surrealistic Pillow), but didn't make an impact. By the mid-80s, without having found rock-star fame, Segarini went on to a successful FM radio career in Canada using the nickname "The Iceman."
