HOLY HIGH GRADE, BATMAN, WE’VE GOT A NINE-EIGHTER!

BG-2 Big Brother & Holding Co., Great Society 1966 "Batman" Fillmore Concert Poster Graded 9.8. A first-printing San Francisco concert poster for seven different bands playing only the second Bill Graham dance-concert weekend at his new shrine, the Fillmore Auditorium, on Friday thru Sunday evenings, March 18-20, 1966. This poster was designed by the dean of San Francisco poster artists, Wes Wilson - his first creation for Graham - and was graded a Pow! Bam! 9.8 Near Mint/Mint by CGC (the Certified Guaranty Company).

This poster represents an exciting crossroads of the new acid-rock and comic-book pop cultures. To promote the weekend's activities, Wilson created his first Bill Graham "psychedelic" poster (of sorts) centered around Batman & Robin. The Batman live-action TV show had just debuted on ABC on January 12, so was surely an influence on Wes as he dreamed up his first BG poster. Appearing over the sprawling weekend were Big Brother & the Holding Company (no Janis Joplin yet), the Great Society (with Grace Slick), Quicksilver Messenger Service, the Mystery Trend, the Family Tree, the Gentleman's Band and the Skins.

This is an extremely scarce first printing of the poster, done before the event. Last summer, Heritage auctioned off another 9.8 - which are incredibly few and far between - and it realized $40,000. Measures just a hair under 14" x 20". From the Ben Bierman Carmel Street Collection. LOP from Ben Bierman, COA from Heritage Auctions.
