Description

Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane 1967 Kaleidoscope L.A. Circular Concert Poster Graded 9.4 (AOR-3.77). An original first-printing concert poster, of obviously a highly unusual nature, for the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane and L.A. boogie-blues band Canned Heat playing at the short-lived Kaleidoscope club in the heart of Hollywood, California on Friday and Saturday nights, April 14 & 15, and Sunday afternoon, April 16, 1967. The very first in the Kaleidoscope run of round posters, this has been graded a very strong 9.4 Near Mint by CGC (the Certified Guaranty Company). This poster is so unusual and cool, the Art of Rock book gave it a full page. Measures about 18 ½" in diameter. From the David Swartz Concert Poster Collection. COA from Heritage Auctions.

Literature: See Grushkin, Paul, The Art of Rock: Posters from Presley to Punk, Abbeville Press, New York, 1987, p.279 (full-page illus.).

More Information: Features very compelling graphics from the height of the hippie-era flower-power movement when all was still young & fresh. "The Kaleidoscope Is Turning On," it says in the outermost large letters. The Art of Rock book thought so much of these circular Kaleidoscope posters that they displayed nine of them, but this is the only one to get a full page all to itself.

Due to legal tussles, the weekend of shows actually had to be moved away from 1228 Vine Street over to the Embassy Ballroom in the Ambassador Hotel, about four miles away. But they did happen.

The Grateful Dead's debut album on Warner Bros. had just been released one month prior, and would sneak into Billboard's album chart in early May. The Jefferson Airplane were further along with Surrealistic Pillow already on the chart and likewise "Somebody to Love," with both eventually bound for the Top 5. Thus, the Airplane's top-center billing on the poster.
