Description
FD-28 13th Floor Elevators 1966 "Zebra Man" Avalon Poster Signed by Stanley Mouse, Graded 9.0. First-printing San Francisco concert poster for the 13th Floor Elevators and Quicksilver Messenger Service playing at the Avalon Ballroom on Friday and Saturday nights, September 30 & October 1, 1966. Known as FD-28 in the Family Dog numbered series and nicknamed "Zebra Man," this very popular poster was designed by Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelley and has been stylistically signed by Mouse down in the venue box. It was subsequently graded to 9.0 Very Fine/Near Mint by CGC (the Certified Guaranty Company). Measures 14 1/8" x 20". COA from Heritage Auctions.More Information: Roky Erickson's highly influential Elevators were just moments away from releasing their underground-classic debut album, The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators. Second-billed Quicksilver were, of course, a mainstay on the San Francisco concert scene, but still a year away from signing with Capitol Records.
The "Zebra Man" used for this poster was originally printed as a black & white cover on Life magazine in 1954. When updated with the blue & orange coloring by Mouse & Kelley, it made for a very vibrant image and perfect psychedelic concert poster.
The Elevators had actually charted a Top 50 single in Cashbox magazine at the start of '66 with "You're Gonna Miss Me" on International Artists. Their new single at the time of these shows, "Reverberation Doubt," would not fare as well, just bubbling under the Top 100 in Billboard.
