Marlon Brando in Shadows Photo by Mary Ellen Mark. A 14" x 11" b&w silver gelatin print of a brooding Marlon Brando, taken by photographer Mary Ellen Mark on the set of Apocalypse Now. Brando showed up on the set not only without having learned his lines, but also massively overweight, when his character had been been scripted as tall and emaciated. Both Mark and director Francis Ford Coppola photographed him in basically the same way: in shadows and with careful angles that hid his belly and made the 5'10" actor appear to be a 6'5" brute.
