Pan's Labyrinth (Tequila Gang, 2006), Raúl Monge - "Test of Three Doors" Concept Sketch Original Art. One of the most striking and terrifying sequences in del Toro's entire film, these concept sketches-labeled "La Pida Puentas Salon Hombre Pálido Boceto"-show early artistic renderings of the Pale Man's (Doug Jones) lair, the distinctive gothic architecture of this macabre domain, and the terror that Ofelia (Ivana Baquero) experiences as she runs for her life. One image shows her standing before the test of three doors, while the other captures her fleeing in terror from the Pale Man. Ofelia's costume evokes Alice in Wonderland, especially in the apron strings, while the eerie, vaulted chamber and hungry mouths reinforce the Pale Man's lair as a site of surreal menace. As del Toro noted-and as these drawings demonstrate-the lair is designed to resemble a church, embedding themes of hunger, corruption, and the consumption of the young into every facet of the film. Rendered in delicate pencil with gothic detail and symbolic composition, this haunting moment was brought to life through the visionary hand of conceptual artist Raúl Monge. Graphite on paper with an image area of 14.5" x 9.75". Exhibits light handling and bumping. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions. From the personal collection of Guillermo del Toro.
