Star Trek: The Original Series (Paramount TV, 1966-1969), Nichelle Nichols "Lt. Uhura" Red Starfleet Uniform. Vintage original signature Starfleet duty uniform as worn by Lt. Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) during the third season of the hit television series, constructed of a bias-paneled red double-knit polyester uniform dress with corded black scooped and peaked neck collar, flared integral mini-skirt with slit from left hem to waist, retaining original gold lamé Starfleet insignia to upper left chest and gold laminate Lieutenant rank braids on sleeve cuffs, secured with a zipper closure hidden to right front panel seam down to waist, with hook-and-eye fastener at the collar. Retains costumer's internal fabric bias label made illegible due to age and laundering. Lot includes original pair of matching red Danskin cotton briefs worn to protect Nichols' modesty due to the very short design of the dress. Notably, uniforms like this from the third season marked a departure from the distinctive velour costume designs of the previous two seasons towards a more durable, synthetic fabric for Season 3. Exhibiting expected age, wear, and handling commensurate with production-used wardrobe, including minor fabric pulls and delicate zipper function. Nichols' turn as the chief communications officer marked a watershed moment as one of the first black actors to be portrayed in a key speaking role in American television, and remains today one of the most revered characters of the series. This piece has been held in the collections of two notable collectors of Hollywood memorabilia, Greg Jein and Dr. Stewart Berkowitz.
