Lee Brown Coye - "Fat Guy Eating" Illustration Original Art (undated). Lee Brown Coye came to define the look of black and white horror illustration for such important publishers as the famed Arkham House. A bloated diner prepares to feast, his exaggerated features and utensils rendered in stark black ink. Known for his eerie illustrations in pulp magazines and horror fiction, Lee Brown Coye brings the same surreal intensity to this satirical scene. The twisted composition and grotesque humor transform a mundane meal into a darkly comic reflection on gluttony, filtered through Coye's unmistakable visual language. Drafted in ink over graphite with an image area of 7.25" x 7.5"; framed to 13.5" x 13.5". Signed by Coye in the lower margin. Exhibits light handling. Unexamined out of frame. Exhibited at LACMA, MIA, and AGO as part of the
Guillermo del Toro: At Home with Monsters exhibit (2016-2018).
Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions. "Lee Brown Coye is, in my opinion, the most disturbing illustrator to come out of the
Weird Tales magazine school of image making. Along with Ed Cartier, he manages to find the odd detail to make the inoffensive dangerous or odd. He was a remarkable craftsman and taught advanced art to generations of painters and illustrators. I believe the late Richard Sala, Mike Mignola, and myself were always searching for his work to acquire."
From the personal collection of Guillermo del Toro.
