Batman (TCF TV, 1966-1968), Liberace "Chandell" Tuxedo Ensemble. Vintage original (2) piece ensemble for Liberace's role as Chandell in the original
Batman series, consisting of (1) S. Fisher brand black silk smoking jacket with ornate gold-colored metallic pattern, featuring solid black silk shawl collar, integral front waist tie belt, and interior with gold-colored metallic embroidered "Liberace" with trademark piano design, and (1) pair of black wool tuxedo pants with black satin woven braid trim down each side and zipper and hook-and-eye front closure, retaining internal Acuna Hollywood bias label typed, "Liberace Sept 1966". Chandell (Liberace) appeared in two consecutive episodes of the hit camp series, including Season 2, Episode 15, "The Devil's Fingers", in which this outfit appeared during a scene where Liberace attempts to seduce the matronly Aunt Harriet (Madge Blake). Notably, these were Liberace's personal clothes, which he chose to wear instead of studio-provided clothing as the wardrobe department garments were not up to his infamously exacting standards. Tuxedo components present very nicely, with minor expected production wear and age, and are accompanied by a white tuxedo shirt with synthetic frilled bib and lace cuffs, sparkly black bowtie, sparkly black socks, sparkly black dress shoes, gold-toned costume rings, and costume martini glass for display purposes. This ensemble has been held in the collections of two prominent collectors of Hollywood memorabilia, John Azarian and Dr. Stewart Berkowitz.
Provenance: Christie's and Butterfield & Butterfield, "The Liberace Collection", April 9-12, 1988, Lot #954; Christie's, Auction 1145, December 20, 2002, Lot #35; Profiles in History, "The Azarian Collection", December 17, 2019, Lot #1089. Stewart took great pride in displaying his collection and had many custom-built mannequins in the likeness of the character made for his costumes. This lot includes one of those mannequins, which is in used and well-loved condition and will require special shipping. The option is yours if you would like to receive the mannequin.
