Batman (TCF TV, 1966-1968), Frank Gorshin "Riddler" Signature Ensemble. Vintage original (7) piece signature ensemble worn by Riddler (Frank Gorshin) in the original
Batman television series, consisting of (1) kelly-green long-sleeved turtleneck leotard with large black silk-screened question mark on front and back and a band of similar, smaller question marks around each wrist, with back zipper closure, retaining handwritten notation "R" to neckline in ballpoint pen, (1) matching pair of green briefs with an elastic waist, (1) pair of matching green leggings with enclosed feet closures and a row of black question marks along the length of each leg, retaining internal handwritten "R" to waistband in ballpoint pen, (1) rigid leather cummerbund-style belt with a purple-painted finish and a corset-style closure made of 5- eyelets with purple fabric ties at verso, (1) pair of lavender purple polyblend driving gloves with single purple-marbled button closures, (1) lavender polyblend bandit-style eye-mask with black elastic closure and plastic clip, and (1) pair of emerald green faux leather slippers. From his very first appearance in the pilot episode of the series, Frank Gorshin's Riddler was a staple of the beloved, camp-driven series, and his performance channeled the character's distinct brand of mischief not only through his antics, but also through the outlandish, colorful, instantly recognizable costume ensembles he wore, most notably the present example. Ensemble components exhibit production use, wear, and age including soiling and toning throughout, production darning to briefs, and 1- 5.5" breach and 1- 3" breach to inside ankle area of leggings, with signs of prior repairs to each. Accompanied by a replica Riddler's "question mark" cane for display purposes.
Provenance: Debbie Reynolds Costume Collection, acquired directly from 20th Century Fox in the early 1970s; sold via private treaty in 2012. Stewart took great pride in displaying his collection and had many custom-built mannequins in the likeness of the character made for his costumes. This lot includes one of those mannequins, which is in used and well-loved condition and will require special shipping. The option is yours if you would like to receive the mannequin.
Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
