The Honeymooners (CBS TV, 1955-1956), Kramden Family Kitchen Sink Set Piece. Vintage original porcelain kitchen sink used as set dressing in the Kramden family's sparse Brooklyn apartment that comprised the central location for the groundbreaking television sitcom,
The Honeymooners, starring Jackie Gleason as Ralph Kramden and Audrey Meadows as his wife, Alice. Along with several other key pieces of furniture including a kitchen table and stove, this sink was seen in every episode of the series during its two-season run. It is constructed of a composite porcelain basin that has been painted white several times to refinish its look, with standard hot and cold metal faucets and propped up on 2- black-painted metal legs. The entire unit is affixed to a black-painted wooden structure simulating a wall and floor enclosure, and is set on 4- wheels for movement. Rear of wooden structure retains original set dresser's stamp reading, "PROPERTY OF / W. 47TH ENCORE". Set dressing for the series including this piece was modeled after the items in Gleason's childhood home at 328 Chauncey St. in Brooklyn. Measuring 46" x 26" x 20" including the wooden structure and exhibiting expected signs of production use and age including wear to the white-painted finish and chips and scuffing to the wood. Also retains a Christie's Visitor's Pass from the consignor's original acquisition of the item.
Provenance: Christie's, "Entertainment Memorabilia", November 18, 2003, Lot #28, where it sold for $19,120.
