DC Batman Vinyl School Supplies & Pistol Pencil Box (Mattel/Empire Pencil Co., 1966). A vibrant, vintage assortment of Batman-themed school supplies from the mid-1960s, including three vinyl items from Standard Plastic Products (a subsidiary of Mattel) and a pistol-shaped pencil box by Empire Pencil Co. The three vinyl pieces-a 3-ring binder, a bifold wallet, and a tri-fold pencil holder-are constructed from a striking yellow soft vinyl and feature bold comic-style graphics of the Caped Crusader. Notably, the artwork on the wallet reuses the iconic Batman pose originally illustrated for the 1964 Aurora model kit. These items display mild to moderate scuffing, soiling, and minor wear from age, with the tri-fold pencil case exhibiting the most soiling and light cracking along its folded edges.
The Empire-made hard plastic "Pencil Box" remains sealed to its original cardback, though the bubble is lifting in several areas and has multiple small cracks. The pencil box itself also has some small stress cracks. The backing card is in heavily worn condition, with extensive creasing, veining, edge wear, corner wear, and handwritten markings. Despite the condition, the packaging is a unique example of mid-60s Batman merchandising, featuring a rarely seen image of Batman holding a pistol-a curious departure from the character's famously anti-gun ethos.
This lot is a fun and visually dynamic example of early Batman licensing, reflecting the character's massive pop culture impact during the height of the 1966 television craze. These items are perfect for collectors looking to flesh out their Batman, DC Comics, or vintage school supplies displays with genuine era-defining flair. Bid boldly-because when it comes to '60s Batman collectibles, this much color and character doesn't show up in homeroom every day!
