Charlie Watts Signed Hotel Astor, NY Page (1964). Vintage original sheet of Hotel Astor, Times Square New York letterheaded stationery paper, prominently signed in blue ballpoint by Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts who has also inscribed "the Rolling Stones" and "Love". Inscribed in red ballpoint in unknown hand to the top left corner "10-24-64" and to the top edge "Charlie Watts autograph". Measuring 5.5" x 6.75" folded, the sheet opens to a diary page applied to the paper, dated October 25, 1964, and inscribed in blue ballpoint "Stones on Ed Sullivan". Up to this point the Stones had garnered a large and growing UK fanbase, but their first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show was an attempt to break America in the same way the Beatles had done in February of that year. The Stones opened with a cover of Chuck Berry's "Around & Around", and closed the show with their own track "Time Is On My Side". Such was the visceral reaction from the young audience that Sullivan's conversation with Jagger was practically inaudible due to the crowd's screams. Despite being a ratings hit and a launch point for the Stones in the US, Ed Sullivan was so frustrated with the rowdy atmosphere he famously declared "I promise you they'll never be back on our show". Exhibits light fold lines, handling creases, toning to the paper, and minor nicks to the sheet edges The paper half with the diary page is backed on card which has some tape remains.
