Star Trek: The Original Series (Paramount TV, 1966-1969), Revised Early Draft from Original Pilot Episode "The Cage" (Working Title "The Menagerie"). Vintage original revised draft script for the original pilot episode written by Gene Roddenberry for his new series,
Star Trek, studio-bound 73-page (as paginated), bradded on mimeographed paper and dated November 20th, 1964. Contains blue-revision pages dated up to December 8th,1964 as well as handwritten annotations in blue ink to interior cast page, including James Hunter as Captain James Winter for the lead protagonist. This character was of course later changed to Captain Christopher Pike, as noted by an additional revision page contained inside this copy. Item is labeled "File Copy" on tan studio wrap and includes numbered stamp mark to upper righthand corner, likely indicating printing number. Roddenberry previously intended for the episode to be titled "The Cage" before changing it to "The Menagerie" shortly before production. Principal photography began precisely one week after the time this draft is dated, the episode focusing on the crew of the USS
Enterprise led by Captain Winters investigating a distress signal on the planet Talos where they encounter telepathic beings with malicious intentions. Unfortunately, the original filmed pilot was rejected by the network, only to be later re-released using its original title, "The Cage", many years later. During Season 1, Roddenberry and producers reworked and used parts of the shelved filmed pilot for a two-part episode called "The Menagerie", which follows a slightly altered storyline to the original script offered here. Exhibiting expected age and handling, with slight crease wear and minor fraying to studio wrap at top left brad and minimal corner bumps.
Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
