A Concert of the Music of Duke Ellington Program Signed in Pencil by Ellington (ca. 1933). Vintage original 24-page program book from a 1933 Duke Ellington concert titled, "A Concert of the Music of Duke Ellington, Presented By Jack Hylton, By Arrangement With Irving Mills", with signature reading "Duke Ellington" in pencil on center of cover, accompanied by signatures of Ellington's collaborators such as drummer "Sonny Green", vocalist "Ivie Anderson", and vocalist "Connie Boswell". Program features full list of Ellington compositions up until 1933, photographs and personal notes from individual members of Ellington's band, annotations of Ellington's compositions attributed to "MIKE" of the British magazine "The Melody Maker", a set list of the 1933 concert, newspaper sections highlighting Ellington's recent success, advertisements for musical instrument repair/rental businesses, advertisements for other musical arrangements, and a forward by Britain's earliest Jazz composer "Spike" Hughes. Item measures 9" x 11.75" and is crafted from wood pulp with pages stapled together. Ellington was an American jazz pianist/composer who proved to be a domineering force in the world of jazz, achieving recognition through broadcast radio during his time at The Cotton Club and repeatedly playing for The White House and royal families across the globe. Cover signed by Duke Ellington in pencil, with additional signatures including Sonny Greer (drums, percussion), Freddy Jenkins (trumpet), Jack Hylton and Ennis Hylton, singers Connie Boswell and Ivie Anderson. Item exhibits expected age and handling, with light tears, creasing, and corner bumps to front and back cover and slight smudges to inner pages, with pages 11-14 (2-pages) detached from staple binding.
