Rollerball (UA, 1975), Original Hero Ball and Spiked Glove. Original pair of props including (1) dense metal alloy spherical ball painted over in a shimmery gold color and scored into hemispherical segments, and (1) black leather glove embellished with sharp steel spikes affixed to black foam rubber ribbing that runs the length of each finger. Glove contains 15-spikes in total and features a standard wristband of elastic black wool. Ball measures 13" in circumference and weighs 2 lbs., with glove measuring 10.5" in length. These items comprise the signature and immediately recognizable props of the film, featured during sequences of the brutal blood sport that devolves from competitive violence to outright death throughout the film. These iconic prop elements help create the techno-dystopian aesthetic of the film, which critiques corporate influence at the cost of individual freedom, in the lineage of other dystopian science fiction films of the era like RoboCop and Blade Runner. Both items in production-used condition, with roller ball exhibiting signs of oxidation, scuffs, and paint chips revealing the underlying alloy, and with the glove showing oxidation to the metal spikes, scuffs, and wear to the leather. This is the first time Heritage has offered a production-used roller ball from the film. Provenance: From the collection of Ed Apfel, director of the making-of documentary, From Rome to Rollerball; obtained while on set. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
