King of Jazz was Universal's lavish revue showcasing Whiteman and his orchestra, with specialty numbers ranging from comedy sketches to pioneering animation by Walter Lantz. Though not a financial success at the time, the film is now regarded as a landmark in early sound musicals for its extraordinary scale, stylized sets, and bold use of color, and for preserving performances by Whiteman and members of his band (including a young Bing Crosby, in one of his first screen appearances).
