Description
Matt Jefferies Concept Sketch for the SS Botany Bay from Episode, "Space Seed" of Star Trek: The Original Series (Paramount TV, 1966-1969). Vintage original concept sketch established in colored pencil on artist's board. This early sketch was executed before there was a name for the ship and is handwritten "Obsolete Tramp Space Freighter". Named the SS Botany Bay in the Season 1 episode "Space Seed", this sketch plays an important role in Star Trek canon, as it is the derelict spacecraft discovered by the USS Enterprise carrying Khan Noonien Singh (Ricardo Montalban) and his genetically engineered crew, who attempt to take over the Enterprise. Choosing to rule on the uninhabited planet Ceti Alpha V over incarceration, the vengeful Khan faces Captain Kirk and crew 15 years later in the fan-favorite feature film Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Signed on the bottom right by Emmy Award-winning art director Matt Jefferies. Featured on page 19 in the book The Art of Star Trek by Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens (Simon and Schuster, 1995). The art measures 16.25" x 10.5". Exhibiting age, pinholes, paper loss on the top and bottom right corners. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
