Description:

Charlie Chaplin Signed Sketch with Photo (1913). An astounding piece of Chaplin memorabilia, this 6.5" x 8" sheet of paper features perhaps the earliest known autograph by Charlie Chaplin, one dating from before his first film appearance. The inscription reads "Drink to me only with thine eyes/Yours romantically/Charles Chaplin/June 20th 1913" and is accompanied by a self-portrait caricature by Chaplin, all in pencil. Chaplin would frequently draw a caricature of his famous film alter ego, the Little Tramp, next to his name; on this rare lot, the caricature is simply of himself. The date suggests it was drawn and signed by Chaplin a full year before the production of his first feature film, Making a Living. (The Little Tramp debuted in the following film, Kid Auto Races at Venice.) The sketch/autograph is in Very Fine condition with mild wear and some toning, and is accompanied by a vintage 3.5" x 5.5" postcard featuring a b&w image of a young Chaplin, with a partial inscription in pencil on the reverse by Chaplin, in Very Good to fine condition with tape repair to one corner. Accompanied by James Spence Authentication auction LOA.
