Description
Marian Marsh Correspondence from Carl Laemmle, Jr., Billie Burke, Desmond Carter and Edgar Selwyn and Signed Photo. This lot includes a beautiful 10.5" x 13.5" portrait of Marian, taken by Elmer Fryer (his embossed name in lower left corner), signed "To Jack Sherrill A splendid business man. Sincerest regards Marian." Sherrill had been Marian's agent, and apparently she had second thoughts about him, took back the picture or never gave it to him at all, and tried to erase his name! The picture has a one inch tear in the left border and a small smudge, otherwise in Fine condition. Also included are Christmas and New Years greetings in the form of a telegram from famed Universal Studios "Crown Prince" Carl Laemmle, Jr., a pre-printed Christmas card from Mrs. Flo Ziegfeld (aka Billie Burke, "Glinda" of The Wizard of Oz), and a card from actor/playwright Edgar Selwyn. Also notes from lyricist Desmond Carter. Finally, a curiosity: pages of printed information about Van Camp's pureed fruits and vegetables, on which Marian has written in pencil, "These pennies have been here since Jan. 20, 1931. By, M.M." (January 20, 1931 would have been the time Marian was starring in Svengali.) The pennies are gone, but the words remain.
