Description

Ernie Kovacs Signed Checks to the IRS. A pair of personal checks for $1,000 each, written to the IRS, dated September 20 and October 18, 1960, and signed by Kovacs in blue ink. The memo on one reads "Ernie Kovacs 1958 income tax liability on account". A frequent critic of the federal tax system, Kovacs owed the IRS several hundred thousand dollars in back taxes that he refused to pay, and as much as 90 percent of his earnings would be garnished as a result. Kovacs began investing his money in a convoluted series of paper corporations, with names such as The Bazooka Dooka Hicka Hocka Hookah Company, in a bid to thwart Uncle Sam. His widow eventually paid off the debt, many years after his death. The checks are in Excellent condition with the usual bank cancellation marks. From the Ernie Kovacs/Edie Adams Estate Archive.
