Ernie Kovacs Signed Checks, One Written to the IRS. A pair of personal checks, one written for $75 cash, the other a $1,000 payment to the IRS, dated October 4 and 10, 1960, and signed by Kovacs in blue and purple ink The former is also endorsed by him on the reverse, and the memo on latter reads "Ernie Kovacs 1958 income tax liability on account". A frequent critic of the federal tax system, Kovacs owed the IRS several hundred thousand dollars in back taxes due to his simple refusal to pay, and as much as 90 percent of his earnings would be garnished as a result. Kovacs' tax woes also affected his career to the point that he would take any work offered to him, whether or not it fit with to his style of comedy; it was his widow Edie who eventually paid off the debt years after his death.
