Charlie Chaplin Christmas Greetings and Condolence Cards, Signed by his Widow Oona. This lot contains seven Merry Christmas/Happy New Year greetings cards from a late-in-life Charlie Chaplin, his picture featured in all of them with wife Oona and their family. The various photographs (two of them in color), taken at the Chaplin estate in Vevey, Switzerland, show Chaplin and family in different rooms of the house and on the grounds, and all are signed by Oona -- who married him in 1943 (he was 54, he was 17) and became his widow on Christmas of 1977. The lot also contains a "thank you" card that Lady Chaplin (Charlie was knighted in 1975) wrote after his death, with the pre-printed words "Lady Chaplin thanks you for your kind expression of sympathy," and the handwritten inscription, "Dear Peter -- We were all touched by your lovely letter -- I agree with you about the Christmas photograph -- love, Oona." Additionally, there is a pre-printed "thank you" card sent by the children of Oona Chaplin after her death in 1991, and a 7" x 9" photograph of an aged Chaplin talking with a friend. Very intriguing to see the "little tramp" of silent comedies and the tarnished star of 1940s and 1950s headlines, here a venerable gentleman, seemingly at peace in his very private world. All material in Excellent condition.
