Description

The Caine Mutiny Author and Cast-Signed Novel, Including Bogart. Are you now (or have you ever been) a fan of The Caine Mutiny? The 1954 sea-and-courtroom classic, based on Herman Wouk's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, proved a comeback for blacklisted "Hollywood Ten" director Edward Dmytryk. The film is a virtual embarrassment of dramatic riches, slickly packaged by producer Stanley Kramer and sparked by unforgettably dynamic performances -- Van Johnson's reluctant mutineer, Fred MacMurray's arrogant novelist/officer, Robert Francis's impressionable young Ensign and -- dominating them all -- Humphrey Bogart's hauntingly paranoid, ball bearing-rolling Captain Queeg. This illustrated edition of Wouk's novel (with several full-color drawings of the characters) is inscribed "To Ernest Borgnine -- With admiration" and signed by the author in blue ink on the title page. (Borgnine wasn't in the film; in 1954, he was only a year away from his Oscar-winning performance as Marty). In addition, it's inscribed and signed on the inside cover (that offers a "The Cruise of the Caine under Captain Queeg" map) and first free pages by Bogart, Johnson, MacMurray, Francis (who died in a plane crash a year after Caine Mutiny's release), supporting players Lee Marvin (tenth-billed as "Meatball"), Jerry Paris (later an Emmy-winning TV director), Tom Tully, Claude Akins, Arthur Franz, and various production crewmembers -- as well as producer Kramer and director Dmytryk. Even Bogart's wife, Lauren Bacall, signed the book. A striking blend of history that's literary, military, political and, of course, Hollywood. In Very Fine condition with some wear to the dustjacket. Accompanied by James Spence Authentication auction LOA.
