Description
Jack Nicholson's Chinatown Annotated Script. Nominated for eleven 1974 Academy Awards, Chinatown, Roman Polanski's perversely powerful noir thriller starring Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway, won only one Oscar -- for Robert Towne's brilliantly sinister screenplay. Here is Jack Nicholson's original 187-page preliminary script, the star having penned "Jack" on the green cover binder with the Paramount Studios logo embossed upon it. The script contains annotation by both Nicholson (in original marker) and Towne (photocopied). A bit spine-tingling to see the now-classic lines lurking on the script pages, such as "You're a very nosey fellow, kitty kat...you know what happens to nosey fellows?...They lose their noses..." and "'Course I'm respectable. I'm old. Politicians, ugly buildings and whores all get respectable if they last long enough." Chinatown has many distinctions: it was Polanski's final film before fleeing the U.S. when charged with the sexual assault of an underage girl; it ranks no. 21 on the American Film Institute's Greatest Movies of All Time list; and it served as the arena for one of the fiercest director vs. actress battles in Hollywood history (Polanski at one point allegedly attacked Dunaway and tore out strands of her hair). This script presents Chinatown in its early stages, complete with the Nicholson voiceovers Polanski ultimately rejected, and without the "She's my sister AND my daughter!" line that haunts all lovers of great twisted cinema.
