Description
Boris Karloff's Costume Sketches from Brigadoon, Signed by the Artist. Boris Karloff owned and displayed in his home these beautiful, original color costume sketches for Brigadoon, the Lerner and Lowe musical that opened at Broadway's Ziegfeld Theatre March 13, 1947 and ran for 581 performances. These 5.5" x 8.25" sketches present a "Villager" in kilt, home from the hunt and bearing two dead birds, and "A Village Woman" carrying a basket. The two sketches are each taped to a 7.5" x 10" white paper backing and are both signed in black ink by the costume designer, David Ffolkes, who has added the date "Nov: '46" below his name. (Tape on the "Village Woman" sketch covers the date.) Additionally the sketches bear the circular stamp of "United Scenic Artists Local 829" above Ffolkes' signature. Ffolkes won the 1947 Tony Award for Best Costume design - not for this play, but for King Henry VIII, and was costume designer for such shows as Maurice Evans' Hamlet (1938) and Ray Bolger's Where's Charley? (1948). The strikingly colorful sketches were surely charming decorations in the Karloff home and survive as mementoes of both the star's personal taste and a legendary Broadway musical. Very Good condition. From the Boris Karloff Estate Collection. Accompanied by a letter of provenance from Sara Karloff Sparkman.Heritage Auctions provides detailed information when available but strongly encourages in-person inspection.
