Oliver Hardy's First Signed Contract with Hal Roach Studios, February 6, 1926, Earliest Hardy Signature to Surface. Truly an astounding, historic item! This contract, dated February 6, 1926, bears the earliest known Oliver Hardy signature to surface, and is the very first employment contract between Hardy and Hal Roach Studios. Signed on page four by Hardy in black ink and Roach in blue. It was during this same year that Hardy met future partner Stan Laurel; by 1927 they had appeared in their first film together as the vaunted duo of Laurel & Hardy. With Hal Roach, they made their classic series of short films and their first few features; however, by 1936 their relationship with Roach had become strained by artistic differences, and by 1940 they had split from the studio.
