Description
Rebel Without a Cause - Nicholas Ray Contract Archive. Nicholas Ray powerfully detonated film history when he directed Rebel Without a Cause, released October 27, 1955 -- 27 days after the Porsche accident death of the film's star, James Dean. Ray intensely immersed himself in filming this modern tragedy -- riding at night with L.A. street gangs, engaging in a fiery "spiritual marriage" to Dean during shooting, and reputedly having an affair with leading lady Natalie Wood. This Warner Bros. contract file for Rebel Without a Cause, leading off with a one-page agreement, dated September 22, 1954, purchasing Ray's story The Blind Run (upon which Rebel was based), is signed in blue ink by Ray and a notary public.
Also included is Ray's detailed director's contract for Rebel, eight pages, dated September 22, 1954, on Warner Bros. stationery signed in blue ink by Ray and Warners Assistant Secretary RJ. Obringer. There are an additional eight pages (not signed by Ray) regarding The Blind Run and James Dean-related projects later licensed by Warners. The file and all its contents survive in Excellent condition. Accompanied by James Spence Authentication auction LOA.
