Description:
Elvis Presley USS Arizona Memorial Fund/ Concert Document Archive Group (1961). Not long after leaving the Army, Elvis heard about the plight of a group attempting to fund a memorial to the USS Arizona, which was bombed and sunk during the raid on Pearl Harbor with more than 1,000 US sailors entombed inside. The news of the Navy group's failure to raise enough funds to complete the memorial was picked up by newspapers in Hawaii, and the story quickly traveled to the mainland, and to Elvis. He and Colonel Tom Parker planned a fund-raising concert, which was held on March 25, 1961. This voluminous file folder comes from Elvis' bandleader Al Dvorin (the man who coined the famous phrase "Elvis has left the building"), who was the producer for the show. It contains the collected receipts, contracts for musicians, and other paperwork from that legendary show, plus sample stage direction pages from an earlier Memphis concert, a lapel ribbon marked "Official Elvis Presley Show", and letters from Colonel Parker's office. Well over 100 items, averaging Very Good condition. From the Al Dvorin Archive.
