Description
Beatles and the Kingston Trio Signed Hootenanny Magazine Article (New York, 1964). This totally unique item was obtained by and is from the collection of original Kingston Trio member Bob Shane. From 1958 until mid-1964, the Kingston Trio was on Capitol Records, constantly topping the singles and album charts with their popular folk-oriented sound. As they left Capitol, the Fab Four certainly took up the slack for the label for a number of years to come. As the Trio opened the door for generations of folk and acoustic musicians, the Beatles did the same for pop and rock music, also influencing the genres for generations to come. On the Beatles' first full-length American tour, two members of the Kingston Trio went to see them perform and got to meet them. Shane had a copy of the current Hootenanny magazine with him that happened to have a lead article titled "The Kingston Trio vs. Beatlemania," sub-titled: "The Musical Convulsion That Threatens/ Folk Music's Popularity Recalls/ The First Battle With Rock 'n' Roll". He got the Beatles to sign across their picture on the title page of the article (neatly in blue ink) and then he and John Stewart and Nick Reynolds signed their photo (also in blue ink). A fabulous piece symbolizing the "passing of the torch" from one generation of chart-toppers to another. The Kingston Trio is pictured on the cover of this issue and they have all also signed that. The cover, the article, and Bob Shane's handwritten letter of authenticity (see below) are all handsomely matted and framed to an overall 21" x 35". This is one of the most amazing and desirable pieces of signed memorabilia that this cataloguer has ever handled. A one-of-a-kind item. Excellent. The text of his letter reads: "My wife and I and John Stewart went to see the Beatles at Forrest Hills Tennis Stadium on Aug. 28 1964 & got this Hootenanny magazine signed by all 4 members of that group. The Kingston Trio then all signed on the same page and on the cover. To my knowledge, this is the only time this was ever done. [signed] Bob Shane"
