Description
An Orson Welles Large Collection of Black and White Film Stills from "Citizen Kane." RKO Radio Pictures, 1941. Approximately 235, all original prints with a glossy finish, many with a purple or blue stamp on the verso reading in part "Copyright, 1940 / RKO Radio Pictures, Inc.," removed from a keybook (as evidenced by the two-hole punch linen binding on the left margin of all), depicting countless images both in front of the camera and 'behind the scenes' of this most celebrated film, many are staged publicity shots showing cast members together, others depict Welles himself on the set in make-up as "Charles Foster Kane" or behind the camera, directing his troupe, most have never before been seen -- overall, a fantastic collection relating to this iconic film that Welles famously wrote, directed, starred in, and produced which co-starred Joseph Cotten, Dorothy Comingore, Agnes Moorehead, Ruth Warrick, and Everett Sloane; included with a letter from Beatrice Welles indicating she consigned this lot directly to Heritage Auction. (Please note all photographs are 'curled' due to age and many of them have substantial chipping around the margins, and though most of the main image is not affected, the condition is somewhat poor.)10" x 8"
This film was nominated for nine Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Actor in a Leading Role (Welles), Best Director (Welles), Best Cinematography-Black and White, Best Art Direction-Interior Decoration Black and White, Best Sound Recording, Best Film Editing, Best Music-Scoring of a Dramatic Picture, and Best Writing-Original Screenplay which Welles won with co-writer Herman Mankiewicz.
